How to lose belly fat for summer

From lounging lakeside to backyard BBQs, there are so many ways to spend time outdoors doing (+ drinking) the things we love with our loved ones. A long lunch on an outdoor patio on a warm summer afternoon with a few good girlfriends is one of my favorite summertime activities :)

But if we aren't careful. these activities can take a toll on our health + our skin. Hello, sun-damaged skin. Hi there, post-bubbly bloat.

So how can you beat the belly bloat this summer without revoking our license to have fun this time of year? Follow me...

What is belly fat?

From grapefruit to strawberries to tomatoes, citrus foods are packed with the antioxidant Vitamin C. Not only does this powerhouse nutrient help protects our skin cells from UV damage caused by free radicals, it also plays a role in collagen production, helping to give us a smoother skin structure. Make a citrus salad like this Heirloom Tomato + Grapefruit Salad from Bare Root Girl.

Why is belly fat so stubborn?

Sorry, bacon butter-lovers. Not that kind kind of fat. We're talking essential fatty acids (EFAs) omega-3 + omega-6, found only in the foods we eat. EFAs support our skin's health by maintaining the structure of cellular membranes while promoting natural oil production, helping to keep our skin protected + hydrated. And while both essential, omega-6 (vegetable oils + animal-based foods) drives a more proinflammatory effect while omega-3 (walnuts, flax seeds + chia) supports more anti-inflammatory actions. So, like all things, focus on balance, aiming for more omega-3 vs. omega-6.

Can you lose belly fat without exercising?

Green tea, that is. Chock full of plant-based antioxidants called flavenols, green tea may make our skin's cells more resistant to UV damage caused by the sun. While more research needs to be done in this area, don't swap your sunscreen for a cup of tea. Slathering on SPF daily is still crucial to maintaining your skin's health. In the meantime, enjoy a cup of iced green tea like this Peachy Mint Iced Tea by Nutrition to Fit. Add a splash of lemon to double the skin-boosting benefits!
